Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
